Twelve-year-old Meggie lives with her bookbinder father, Mortimer. When a mysterious visitor warns Mortimer that Capricorn is searching for him, father and daughter flee. Mortimer is captured with a book called Inkheart, and Meggie, Mortimer, and their book-loving relative Elinor are imprisoned by Capricorn. Meggie then learns that her father can bring fictional beings into the real world by reading aloud, but every arrival sends someone or something else into the book. Years earlier, this exchange released Capricorn, Basta, and Dustfinger while Meggie’s mother disappeared into Inkheart. As Capricorn’s forces pursue them, Meggie discovers that she shares Mortimer’s remarkable ability.
