Twins Noah and Jude Sweetwine once share everything, including a consuming need to make art, but rivalry, secrecy, and grief divide them. Noah narrates their earlier adolescence, when both seek admission to a competitive art school and he conceals his feelings for Brian along with a larger secret. Jude takes over the later period after their mother’s death, struggling with guilt and creative paralysis as an intense new artistic and romantic world opens around her. Each sibling understands only part of what shattered their family, and their alternating accounts gradually expose the missing pieces. Lyrical and emotionally heightened, the novel uses its divided chronology to explore desire, bereavement, artistic identity, and the damage caused by withholding the truth.
