Eighteen-year-old Sophie Hatter expects to spend her life running the family hat shop in the magical kingdom of Ingary. Although she can speak life into objects, she sees little adventure ahead until the Witch of the Waste curses her into the body of an old woman. Sophie leaves home and installs herself as cleaning woman in the moving castle of Howl, a vain and notorious wizard. There she bargains with Calcifer, the fire demon bound to Howl: if she breaks his contract, he will help restore her youth. As Howl faces orders to find a missing prince and wizard, Sophie becomes entangled in curses, magical obligations, and a castle whose door opens onto four places. The result is a comic fantasy about self-perception, freedom, and unruly affection.
