Stanley Yelnats, convinced that his family is burdened by an old curse, is wrongly convicted and sent to Camp Green Lake, a Texas correctional camp where no lake remains. Every day, the boys must dig a precisely measured hole in the desert while the adults insist that the labor merely builds character. Stanley soon suspects that the warden is searching for something buried beneath the dry ground. His attempt to understand the camp’s purpose connects his own misfortune to stories from the region’s past and to the history of his family. With dry humor and interlocking narratives, the novel turns punishment into a mystery about friendship, racism, names, illiteracy, folklore, and the long consequences of promises either honored or broken.
