Ned and Beth Constantine discover Cornwall Coombe, a seemingly timeless and peaceful village of Colonial houses gathered around a white-steepled church. Believing they have found the quiet haven they wanted, the couple settles into the hamlet’s reassuring atmosphere. That promise does not last. The apparent refuge becomes a place of extreme horror for Ned and his family, transforming their search for peace into a struggle against terrifying circumstances. Thomas Tryon’s novel builds its tension from the contrast between an idyllic rural setting and the danger concealed within it.
