Thirteen-year-old Esperanza has grown up as the privileged daughter of wealthy landowners in Mexico, surrounded by family, servants, and expectations of a secure future. After her father is murdered, that life collapses, and she flees with her mother and former household servants to Southern California during the Great Depression. There, comfort gives way to crowded conditions, poverty, and exhausting agricultural labor among Mexican farm workers. Esperanza must learn practical skills, accept help from people she once regarded as socially beneath her, and face hardships that threaten the family’s fragile new beginning. Guided by her mother’s insistence on gratitude, she gradually discovers that dignity depends less on wealth than on resilience, work, and mutual care in an unequal world.
