In early 1980, Mount St. Helens began rumbling in southwestern Washington, drawing scientists, journalists, sightseers, and local residents into an anxious watch. Steve Olson recounts the mounting volcanic crisis while explaining the mountain’s place in the western volcanic chain associated with the Cascadia fault. He combines the event’s history and science with accounts of people affected by it. The eventual eruption removed the mountain’s summit, devastated hundreds of square miles of forest, and spread ash across the United States and Canada. Eruption presents both the immense geological forces at work and the human experience of confronting a major natural disaster.
