Across fifteen stories, James Joyce traces ordinary middle-class life in and around early-twentieth-century Dublin, moving from childhood and adolescence through maturity and public life. A boy’s trip to a bazaar ends in disillusionment; a young woman weighs escape from Ireland against the claims of home; and a man confronts the literary ambitions he has failed to realize. Other encounters, deaths, missed opportunities, and revived memories bring characters to sudden moments of self-recognition that do not necessarily free them. Against the pressures of Catholicism, nationalism, and British rule, the collection returns to personal and collective paralysis. Its precise, unsentimental vignettes reveal how habit, fear, and social obligation can make even a clearly perceived change impossible.
