Twenty-five-year-old office worker Takako is devastated when her boyfriend announces that he plans to marry someone else. With her job and sense of direction gone, she accepts an offer to live above her divorced uncle Satoru’s cramped second-hand bookshop in Tokyo’s Kanda-Jinbōchō district. Takako initially retreats into sleep and isolation, but shelves of old books, eccentric customers, and conversations about literature gradually draw her back into the world. As she grows closer to Satoru, new acquaintances and family revelations challenge her assumptions about love and intimacy. Quiet and reflective, the novel treats reading not as an escape from life but as a path toward attention, connection, and a more honest relationship with other people.
