Between 1945 and 1950, Wilfred Thesiger traveled with nomadic Arab communities through the deserts of southern Arabia. His account centers on two crossings of the Empty Quarter, tracing arduous routes through Oman, Yemen, and Abu Dhabi while attending to the people whose knowledge made survival possible. The journey is both geographical and observational: five years of shared travel reveal patterns of endurance, loyalty, hospitality, and movement adapted to an unforgiving landscape. Writing in the shadow of postwar development, Thesiger also recognizes that roads, machines, and economic change are beginning to erode the Bedouin way of life he encountered. The book therefore records not only an extreme desert expedition but a culture seen at a moment of irreversible transition.
