As a young veterinarian beginning practice in rural Yorkshire, James Herriot travels through the Dales in harsh weather to reach remote farms, demanding owners, and animals in urgent need. His cases range from the pampered Pekinese Tricki Woo to working livestock whose health can determine whether a struggling farmer survives, as well as an elderly man’s gravely ill dog. Technical uncertainty and physical discomfort accompany the work, but so do eccentric encounters and unexpected affection. Told as linked memoir episodes, the book moves easily between comedy, tenderness, and loss. Herriot’s developing vocation becomes a portrait of rural community and of the complicated bonds connecting people, animals, livelihood, and place.
