About Ryan Holiday
Ryan Holiday is an American writer and businessperson whose nonfiction moves from an insider’s critique of media manipulation and marketing toward practical interpretations of Stoic philosophy. His early work grew out of disillusionment with his role as a hype man at American Apparel, giving his writing a practitioner’s interest in how attention, status, and self-presentation distort judgment. The later books retain that concern while turning toward self-command. Holiday writes in direct, conversational chapters, assembling historical anecdotes, philosophical quotations, and modern public figures into clearly labeled frameworks. The Obstacle Is the Way divides response to adversity into perception, action, and will, while Ego Is the Enemy tracks self-importance through aspiration, success, and failure. The Daily Stoic changes the pace: 366 short entries pair ancient passages with contemporary commentary and small exercises, inviting incremental rather than continuous reading. His recurring subjects are control, restraint, resilience, and the gap between an event and the response chosen to meet it.
