About Friedrich Nietzsche

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) was a German philosopher and writer who began his career in classical philology and became a professor at the University of Basel at twenty-four. Persistent health problems led him to resign in 1879, after which he lived as an independent writer, moving among Switzerland, Italy, and southern France while completing much of his central work. His philological background remained evident in his attention to language, history, and the origins of values. He wrote through aphorism, polemic, parable, and shifts of perspective rather than constructing a continuous philosophical system. On the Genealogy of Morals exemplifies his historical scrutiny of moral ideas, tracing guilt, conscience, and asceticism through relations of power and religious practice. In Thus Spake Zarathustra, sermons, songs, and symbolic encounters turn philosophy into a drama of teaching and misunderstanding. Across these forms, Nietzsche questioned inherited moral and religious authority and asked how life might be affirmed after established certainties had lost their force.
